Eye infections have reached epidemic proportions in Nauru. There appears to be no treatment available and the sufferers have not been given a diagnosis by IHMS. And eye disease is rife in Manus too. It seems to be a result of the bright and burning sun and its reflection on the white ground burning the eyes. Occasionally the men are issued with sunglasses, but this seems to too little, too late.

A few men have reportedly been sent to Port Moresby for surgery but all have returned untreated. I am told that the doctors in PM show the men dirty and rusted instruments, tell the guys that they do not have the facility for safe operations on eyes, and the men decide it is too dangerous.
