PRO-DEMOCRACY HUMAN RIGHTS DEFENDERS DISRUPT STATE PARLIAMENT IN WA.
Defending the right to peacefully protest, a group of pro-democracy human rights defenders disrupted state Parliament in Perth to take a stand against draconian anti-protest laws soon to be passed into law. They stood with their mouths closed before removing the symbolic gags and singing a classic protest song calling for the right to protest to be respected.
With sweeping and broad powers the proposed legislation makes it illegal to be found in possession of an unnamed “thing” or to disrupt “lawful activities”. Widely criticized by environmental, social justice, and legal campaigners the law smashes free speech and criminalizes peaceful protest.

The human rights defenders are from a wide range of activist groups in Perth who have united to send a clear message to the Barnett government: the people WILL resist this authoritarian effort to shut down protest. #protectprotestWA #protectdemocracy #auspol
