“The government has now begun transfers of asylum seeker families to Manus Island, so as well as demonstrating in solidarity with Omid and hunger strikers on Nauru, we’ll be demonstrating over the re-opening of another offshore detention hell hole (see: http://www.abc.net.au/news/2012-11-21/first-asylum-seekers-arrive-on-manus-island/4383876?WT.svl=news0)
Omid, an Iranian asylum seeker on Nauru, is on his 40th day of hunger strike. He is Nauru hospital and is grave danger. He may already have permanent damage to his health. Another 6 asylum seekers are also still on hunger strike. The Pacific Solution 2.0 was supposed to be about saving lives, but it is already killing those on Nauru. Tanya Plibersek, as the Minister for Health and as a Labor Left minister who stood up for refugees in opposition, must speak out NOW for Omid before it is too late. The government has the power to save Omid’s life – and save those on Nauru from years of mental torture – by meeting the demands of the asylum seekers to be brought to Australia and have their refugee claims processed, their fundamental right under the UN Convention. If Tanya and the ALP do not act, any harm that comes to the asylum seekers on Nauru as a result of the hunger strike will be their responsibility.
