“NAURUAN police have charged 15 Iranian asylum seekers with causing $24,000 damage at the island’s processing centre.

The Nauru Police Force completed investigations on Friday and have formerly laid a range of charges, the Nauruan government said in a statement.

The incident occurred on September 30 and was described by Australia’s Immigration Department as a “minor disturbance”.

There was minor damage to kitchens, tents and lights but no staff or asylum seekers were injured, a department spokesman said.

Refugee advocate Ian Rintoul said the charges were politically motivated and aimed at intimidating the asylum seekers.

“There is no law to process asylum seekers, but plenty of law it seems to persecute them,” Mr Rintoul said.

The men are due to appear in the Nauru District Court on Monday.”
