“Don’t excise the Australian mainland from the Migration Act and strip asylum seekers’ rights.

Why is this important?

If the Labor government excises the Australian mainland from the Migration Act, asylum seekers will be barred from making valid visa applications in Australia and can be detained and removed from the country.

This makes it much more difficult for people seeking asylum to exercise their rights under the Refugee Convention and will deny them the right to appeal decisions to higher authorities, making the refugee application process less accountable.

"Rather than trying to help these vulnerable people, this Labor government is now going to try to enact legislation that is so discriminatory and un-Australian that John Howard faced an internal revolt when he tried it in 2006."
-Sarah Hanson-Young, Greens immigration spokesperson.
